Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
I was awarded a free pass earlier today for the 11th-12th. I can totally miss class on Tuesday, but I'm a little torn between my Wednesday classes and going to this.
I'm at the mercy of persuasion.

I can do the $370 price if that's the best deal we can get. I think I heard Christa and Sam can do it too. With Vincent that's four; we only need two more. For those of you that definitely can't do the higher price, you may still be able to get the free pass and still come down with us.

Hey, Husky,
When did you start developing games?
When did you start coming to UNT?
A big fan,

Oho, that should be easy. Come on! You can miss one day of class to literally rub elbows with industry insiders. Imagine who you'll meet, what connections you'll make, and what you'll learn. Heck, they have a friggin "Networking Lounge"... with a bar.Dariel00 wrote:I was awarded a free pass earlier today for the 11th-12th. Do we have any idea on how hotel prices are going to run. Unless I end up having an exam or presentation on Wednesday (chances are nigh, but it is possible), I think I'm down like Chinatown!

This is just seeing if we can get more GDC for cheaper.
Break Man did you receive the expo pass?
-Vincent
That's the thing; I checked who they were giving out free passes to, and I saw that it's for someone who is in a program on video game development. I am fully in my History degree, and I'm pretty sure that, even if I were to go with "creative development", I would be denied a free pass. So I'm a bit on the out-and-out on this one.

I was offered one and I'm a RTVF major. You should give it a try.

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
I saw that all of the nearby hotels were sold out.
If we end up with a very small group of us going down there, a friend of mine at UT offered their place for us to crash.
But just in case this turns into a field trip, I'm contacting some really cheap housing that's very close to the Convention Center. It's like a hostel/dorm set up

free tickets
awesome, i'd like to go to gaming convention in Austin. I'm not sure if my luck is enough to get free tickets though, but I am going to try anyways. Thanks for posting this.

This message is about the pay tickets from GDC, I have the excel document mentioned. Please come to room F204, the game programming lab at Discovery Park today between the hours of 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
If you can't come but want to still go, give me a call at 940-206-3975.
Obviously if we don't get 6 people then we will be going the free route.
//================================================

Just so everyone knows, I had someone in the game club apply for a free pass yesterday and they already received it, so anyone who is discouraged just apply!

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
I'm all signed up for the free pass. I figure it'll take a day or two for the confirmation/rejection, but if they do reject me based on my major, I'll direct them to Chris Kohler, a Japanese major and now editor-in-chief of Wired's Game|Life blog.

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
I got a fee ticket earlier today. I'm probably only going to upgrade it to have the game career seminar for $100. I honestly do not have a lot of money to work with and cannot afford to do the full conference.
Vincent and I were talking about getting the university to pay for some transportation and thing because they have money for going to conferences. But it's probably too late to apply for it and the game club is not yet official (to the best of my knowledge). We can also ask about using this for another conference if need be.
But how are we going to work with lodging and transport? Are we going to carpool or anything? Where are we staying at?
Also, @Dariel00, a hostel? Details please.

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
I highly recommend attending, even if you're just on the expo pass, for the sole purpose of networking. Bring business cards and pass them out like candy. Don't go around begging for a job, just be personable and talk to everyone. I got my first internship by talking about how much I liked Austin to a random guy from Austin who turned out to be the tech director at Vigil Games (this was at GDC '10 in SF).
Also, there are a lot of talks available if you only have an expo pass. Dozens of talks are sponsored, so the companies are paying for the space and they'll let in whatever level of pass they feel like (including expo passes). You can see which talks an expo pass could get you into by going to the schedule builder on the website and only checking the "Expo Pass" box in the filter.

Try for 4:00 to 5:30 in the LARC lab so we can pick out a hotel.

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
Dariel talked to a hostel that's about a mile from the Center and is $25 a night. It has 8 beds open, bikes to rent, and cheap breakfast. I think this is probably the best option. He also has a friend that can house 4 of us, so if we have more than 8 people going we won't be totally sol.cathode26 wrote:https://gdunt.editboard.com/t81-for-people-that-are-going-to-gdc

Re: Game Developer Conference Austin
For members who are paying for extra events at the conference, you must register twice with two different emails: once for the free pass, and once for the pass you are paying for.

I regret to inform you all
that due to schoolwork
and normal work
I have no time to spend on attending GDC.
Sorry guys,
don't mean to let you down
but I have obligations, and higher priorities.

So, it looks like I missed the cut-off for pre-registration. Looks like I'll have to register when I get there (the email does say this is possible).
