Re: Suggestions
I did something similar when I was at Westwood. I talked with a couple guys from Gearbox; hopefully I can dig up their contact info somewhere and shoot 'em an email. I also have a friend in Austin that knows some people; probably mostly low level workers, but it would still be interesting to hear from them.Threepwood42 wrote:I had to do some interviews once for a research paper in HS about the career I wanted to go into

Re: Suggestions
As for writers, I know Gearbox's Anthony Burch...I can see about contacting him, and I know some other peeps in a could smaller companies, such as mumbo jumbo.
Auditions
I think per-project, there need to be auditions of sorts. Rather than making the teams hunt for resources, let those responsible for said resources offer them directly to a given project.
Let the writers write: of the basic summaries and plots they craft from simple idea(s), the project's director picks his writer(s) to see the project through.
Let the composers compose: of the themes and melodies they find, the project's director selects his favorites and hooks that composer up to finish a score.
One thing I'm not solidifying here is whether any given project is allowed only one writer and one composer. But, say, all of our musicians working together on every single project just isn't as practical as one per game, because: we don't wanna distort and convolute the artistic vision/focus of any team, nor do we want every game to sound the same for having the same sound designer(s).
What d'y'all think?

Re: Suggestions
^ That's pretty much the point of the Brainstorming and Recruiting pages and to a lesser extent the Specialization forums.
There are no hard-set rules for any organization in the club really. If a specialist likes an idea, he can offer his service to the idea person. Or if an idea person likes a specialist, she can send a message requesting their service. I've had both so far, and I like both. Now I'm waiting for those specialists to get their first ideas in to make sure their work will work for me.
Also, like was said in General guide for groups, people can form groups if they want or be "freelance" if they'd prefer. It really just depends on each individual and the person in charge of an idea. Obviously it would be inefficient to have everybody work on everything.

Ohlrightyo, coolio.
Tutorials
I don't know if we've already got one up, but I think a topic about tutorials would be really helpful to us all. That way, beginners can have a chance to get started and hands on while the intermediate and advanced people can also practice a bit. I think a topic with links to different tutorials, like for UDK, Maya, 3ds Max, XNA, etc would benefit this group greatly.

This is the reason why we have divided up the boards for each individual aspect, and we have resource threads in each of those boards just for that purpose.

Re: Suggestions
Indeed. =) We'll try to find some good tutorials for everyone. If you find any that you really like, don't hesitate to post them. The more resources, the better.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed already but I think that monthly meetings are too far apart for the club to be effective. A whole month gives people a lot of time to forget or get caught up in other things. I don't think we can justify weekly meetings but bi-monthly meetings sound do able.

I agree. We should be meet more than once a month, even if there is no official business to attend to.

Re: Suggestions
You've got a good point. We're working on ways to meet up that won't exclude anyone with a busy schedule, so we'll let you know when we figure something out. And again, if either of you have any suggestions on the matter, we would be happy to take them under consideration. =D The more ideas, the better.

Re: Suggestions
From people I've talked to that can't make it Mondays, it seems Tuesdays mostly work, so we'll probably start holding meetings Mon and Tues. I can't make it Tuesdays so those will be presided over by our VP, Will aka Break Man. Records Keeper Christa, thasric, can make both days, so she can provide notes and make sure anything important discussed at the Mon meeting is announced at Tues.
I was thinking of having the next meeting three weeks from the last, but I was informed that was Halloween. I figure everyone would rather get drunk and/or candy that night, so I'll probably schedule another date. I'll of course let y'all know as soon as I do.
[Edit:] On second thought. Let's do it that night and have a costume contest! I'll make a separate thread for this to keep the suggestion thread clutter free.

B-b-but that's the night I wanted to get all liquored up and chase really short skirts! Curse you and your group business!
And yes, I realize this idea ends with me getting the shit beat out of me, either by a girl with stilettos, or an angry boyfriend. Either way.

Re: Suggestions
What about a Work-In-Progress, or "What you are working on now" section of the forum.
