Simple Game Idea
I don't want anything that necessarily has "Levels." I.E. Mario. Most games that people pick up now-a-days, especially in the mobile platform era, is one with replayability. This is where I would like to create a game with character, creativity, and to show versatility as a programmer and as an artist so that when used as a resume builder, key fundamentals are used, mainly ones that are smiled upon.
The idea behind this is , hypothetically, the game can go on forever--as in you can't win. Base it on a high score, have it uploaded to a leaderboard and that is where the replay factor comes in. I say this because of most old coin-op arcade games are based upon the leaderboard system, and they were popular [back then; stoneage]. I have a few ideas of games that could potentially fill this realm, but I am open to a discussion.

Re: Simple Game Idea
This could certainly work. I know games like Helicopter are super addicting; so simple yet somehow so fun to play. Thinking in the confines of this group, too, this game would be more feasible with our limited time and resources.
Granted, a "never-ending game" could be interesting with more modern graphics and play styles. I'd like to see someone make an arcade, leaderboard style game but with more modern sensibilities.

I can make next-gen work. It's merely an idea that is needing to be implemented. Something witty, fun, funny perhaps. Something that would grab attention.
Re: Simple Game Idea
Have you seen/played the game "Self Destruct" by Terry Cavanagh?
This is a quality example of difficult, but not hard, replayable, quick and easy to pick up, arcade like, and it has a high score list.
Not suggesting that it would be something to copy, but if you want to research, play that, and see how you feel.

Self-Destruct is a very simple game to replicate, i've only seen about 4 classes of enemies, a few powerups and a tiled background.
simple is good.

I said I wasn't suggesting copying it, but if that's your goal, sure... (but maybe I misunderstood you =P)
It was more of to give you a goal on how it feels to play an arcade style game.
And it has so many more enemies >=) Such a fun game =D

Re: Simple Game Idea
Speaking as a veteran of the arcade machines of the so-called stoneage: Yes, please.
But with an ending. One of my favorite portable games recently is an iPhone game called Radiant. It's an updated space invaders clone and it's hella fun. Very addictive, very challenging-but-simple. It has an ending, and it's true that I stopped playing it very often once I reached that ending, but I like the finality. I still have it and will probably never delete it from my phone. It incorporates the high score board but it has that happy-making ending, you know?
I don't like games that it's impossible to win. I don't mind if the ending is far-flung and you have to be a freaking beast to reach it; I don't mind if I will never personally get there, I just want it to be possible to win.

Re: Simple Game Idea
I think Friday night I'm going to coop up in the library (since its 24hr) and try and knock out a one nighter game - top ortho space shooter, using unity.
If anyone else would like to join in the fun, let me know.

I remember next to nothing of programming, but it sounds like fun. I'm up for it.

Re: Simple Game Idea
I'm going to have to call off meeting today at the library. This past week i've been getting sick and I want to not pass it on to anyone else. So this is on a temporary hold. Cheers.
