Game Developer Conference Austin

Hey everyone,

The Game Developer Conference in Austin is giving away free tickets to students. It says that if you are selected for free tickets they will contact you a week before the conference.

For members who are paying for extra events at the conference, you must register twice with two different emails: once for the free pass, and once for the pass you are paying for.

Thanks, man. I love the GDC. I hope someone goes and represents our club down in Austin. This would be a great opportunity for any of us.

I think a group of us should at least try to go down. I would love to go, but I don't have any transportation.

Thats too bad its monday - wednesday. I can't afford to miss classes

It looks like they automatically authorize anyone that signs up, Christa and I both already got our invitations, so I suggest everyone sign up if you're willing to miss class/work those days. I'm definitely going; I can fit three to four more people that want to go. I may also upgrade my pass to include the Game Career and/or Game Writing seminars, if anyone wants to attend those with me.

This could be a great opportunity for us to network with our future bosses and peers; hell, they have a "Networking Lounge". Regardless of who does/doesn't come, I'll take as many notes as I can and pimp our club to everyone who listens.

Also, because Austin just so happens to kick ass, I'm likely to go down at the beginning of the weekend to spend some nice time down there.

Edit: Holy crap! It's this weekend. I haven't asked off work, gotten homework taken care of, booked a room....

Is there anyone who wants to go down either Monday night or Tuesday morning that I can catch a ride with?

I assume I will go down on monday night, unless I can work some kind of deal with GDC to give me a cheaper pass so that I can go the whole 4 days.

Let us know if you manage that, will you? I'd love to have access to all events, but I can't afford anything beyond a couple hundred dollars.

Any other members going who want more than the free pass? XD Maybe we could get a group discount or something.

[Edit] Oh, and this doesn't change our Monday meeting. It will still take place Monday, October 10 at 8:00 pm in Wooten, Room 322.

I made contact with GDC and they seemed interested in maybe a group discount, I await a response from the higher up people.

Well going off current plans and passes, I'm gonna go down to Austin Monday night after the meeting. Yes, that will be around 9 or 10, so we'd get in Austin around midnight or one.

It doesn't sound like a lot of people signed up, so it may just be us three. If you'd like, Vincent, we can drive together. We could also look at splitting a hotel room.

If anyone else is coming too, let us know.

Typically, for Online if you have a group of 6 or more, I can offer you a group discount on any combination of All Access, Main Conference, Summit/Tutorial passes. Since you are students, I can increase that discount based on how many will be attending.

Thanks, Vincent. The tickets are all pretty pricey, but maybe if we all get a Summit/Tutorial pass (which is the cheapest of the three he listed) they'd be willing to bring it down to a reasonable price that could work for all of us. Heck, if they're really nice, maybe we can step up to Main or All Access. Keep in mind, guys, this may still mean a couple hundred dollars. If everyone that is available could let us know as soon as possible, maybe we can get the discount even lower.

We also still may be able to get the free expo passes. While appreciate Vincents work very much, the free passes may still be the only viable option for us. Again, everyone that is thinking of going, let us know asap.

Hm =/ That's still $420 for the cheapest. I'm not sure I'd be able to do it. Maybe we should focus on the free Expo Pass, and maybe we can get the Writing or Career passes.

...$420? I really, REALLY want to go to this, but if it means that much, I'm screwed. I've only got $500, period, which means I wouldn't even be able to afford a room when I got down there, much less the conference.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to skip Monday - Wednesday just yet. I'll see if I can, though...

Shit, I'm torn. I really want that pass, but I really can't afford a ticket that costs that much plus hotel and food. Maybe we can stay in these guys good graces, save up for better tickets next year, and go for the free passes this year.

Well what price could you afford. I think the best thing we could do now is find 6 people and ask each other what we can pay?

I was thinking of asking for 300 per ticket, but I don't know if we have 6 people who can pay 300.

So everyone that is thinking about going let me know what you can pay?

I can pay... $100. Seriously, that's all I've got. I'd be dipping into savings, and I was going to until I heard the extra $2-300 I'd need to pay for this. I was expecting being a student would have its advantages.

We can go at the free price, but we only get the expo pass, and you need to get a response from GDC offering you the Expo pass.

This is just seeing if we can get more GDC for cheaper.
