Double Fine funding game through Kickstarter Empty Double Fine funding game through Kickstarter

So yesterday I read on Destructoid that Double Fine will fund it's next completely through Kickstarter, with a donation of $15 getting you a copy of the game at release.

Less than 24 hours later and they have already surpassed their goal. Just warms the heart, doesn't it?

I definitely that is cool to see people funding games this way. Makes me think about funding a project in the future this way.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to look into Kickstarter and see how it works. The thing is, we can't really use this instance as any sort of template on how to succeed on there. Double Fine is already a widely popular studio with a huge fanbase and great critical reception. Any new, unknown company that goes on there will likely have a hard time getting any sort of funding.

I would like to see more big devs going this route, though. It's like giving power to the gamers to give power to the developers. Maybe we'll see more games based on whether or not they're good, rather than whether or not they'll sell.

I agree with you 100% that the more mainstream you are the more success you will have using that sort of platform to fund a project. I think it could work for devs that are looking to create a sequel or a group of devs that are part of a community. For example this club decided to make a game or some other software but needed help we could reach out to the UNT community by posting on there and saying if you want to support this project or etc you can donate and help us fund it you know?

I know it's just an example, but I don't know if I like the idea of monetizing the club like that. For now, our projects should primarily be learning tools. Only when the games are finished should we think about selling them if they're good enough. Plus, I don't think we really need money now to produce games: we don't have offices to pay for, employees with salaries, we can find most software we'd need for free.

I do like the idea of a community of developers though. I'd love to see professional companies share resources and talents more. It'd be interesting to see the variety of games we might get if that became more common, especially if those games were funded or encouraged by fans. Maybe if some companies come out of our club and UNT we'll stay close and communal.
